What are the key techniques used in Lighting?

They use a lot of natural light in films. This can be for various types of weather, to time in the day or night or even for different moods. It is also used to make a scene look more natural and not much lighting effects go into it.
High contrast lighting is when there is a strong contrast between a bright light and a shadow and has a small portion of in-between scale.
Hard light and soft light are mainly the types of light of you can get. Hard light brings a lot more detail to it's object more than soft light and seperates light from the shadows whereas soft light takes away the detail.
Pictorlism is an international style of photography and aesthetic movement that was used in film in the 19th and 20th century. It is the placement of the key light to make a dark visual image.

When people use a bright, blue sky, people think it's to show happiness. However that is not always the case. In Little Miss Sunshine there is a clear sky but the family goes through many problems. Like the grandad dying and the son finding out that he is colourblind. The blue sky in this film is linked in on the son, Dywne wanting to be a pilot. But he learns that he is colourblind and therefore cannot be one. The sky is meant to show that the family are going somewhere.
